Aeolian Islands ->
Lipari

Lipari is the most
developed and populated of the islands, where the main city
lies. The ancient acropolis towers above the town, standing on
an isolated volcanic mass, providing a natural fortress with
extensive views for miles around, and where the museum houses
the best collection of neolitic culture in the world.
Below lies the picturesque harbour, the Marina Corta, a
popular place to sit at one of the outdoor cafes and watch the
hydrofoils come and go. It is more than a convenient stop for
the tourist, it is a working harbour where the fishing fleet
moors. The buildings around the harbour have changed little
over the past century and many of the cafes and coffee houses
have been catering for merchants and buyers who have been
coming to buy pumice from the world's largest deposit for at
least 100 years. |
